The design of the art gallery references the Bali Nyonya culture. Bali Nyonya, also known as Native Chinese or Straits Chinese, refers to the mixed-race descendants of Chinese immigrants from China who intermarried with Southeast Asian aborigines. Influenced by the British colonization, the building contains elements of Chinese design of the last century, Western elements and Southeast Asian elements. (It may also be called Sino-Portuguese architecture, Chinese Baroque, Straits/Singapore Eclectic architecture or Peranakan architecture).
